Flash Photography

Tonight was my last class for Intermediate Photography.
Tear.
But the good news is my brain is bursting with theory and techniques for using flash (off camera).

One of the techniques we learned was how to use flash at sunset.
My GORGEOUS friend Ashley helped me out *again*. :D

This is Utah Lake at Sunset with no flash.
Basically, you get a perfect silhouette.

This is what you get WITH a flash (and an orange gel).
Pretty cool eh?

With Flash.
No Flash.
Check out those sexy legs!

I am IN LOVE with the results of this shoot.

For part of the shoot Ashley wore a floppy hat and a feather boa and we pretended she was a celebrity. It was hilarious!

I think this would be the perfect technique for engagement photos, or even bridals!
Sunsets, silhouettes, a gorgeous lake...
What more do you need?
Seriously, I'm dying to try it out again, so if you know any engaged couples, send them my way!

Thanks again to my beautiful model Ashley!

  1. Hey very cool work! So...did you fire the flash on or off camera?

I'm still learning the ways to use flash - I pretend I'm an "available light" artist...but really I'm teaching myself as I go along and try to figure it out.

Here's a GREAT site if you haven't already visited. Read the archives...it's goooood stuff.

On the right side of the blog you'll see Lighting 101 and Lighting 102 - enjoy.

  2. The flash was off-camera. It's pretty easy once you've done it once or twice.
That is a great website! I definitely need to practice more so I'll be trying some of their techniques. Thanks Ryan!
